The last time this event occurred, a full lunar eclipse on the Winter Solstice, was back when Charles the First was on the throne of England in the early 1600’s. This event doesn’t happen that often, we should enjoy it.
Lunar eclipses, like other astronomical phenomenon, are filled with folklore and tradition. Many ancient cultures believed that they were caused by a mythical creature swallowing the Moon temporarily. The reddish color the Moon turns during a lunar eclipse tended to spur on this belief.
Some cultures would try to mitigate what they saw as the effects by throwing stones or shouting curses at the Moon or making loud noises, such as firing cannons, as did the Chinese. Medieval Japanese believed that sickness could be caused by a lunar eclipse, and took measures to mitigate the effects by covering up wells.
Still, the belief in bad omens from a ‘blood red’ moon led to the eventual defeat of the Athens at the hands of Sparta. The Athenians delayed the attack on Syracuse because of a lunar eclipse, thus allowing the people of Syracuse to gather together break out and destroy the Athenian army and Navy, paving the way for Spartan Victory.
What I will be watching for are the UFO sightings during the eclipse. It seems that more and more people are sighting UFO’s during eclipses, Lunar or Solar. I will follow-up with the reports I receive of UFO sightings after the eclipse.
I hope that the skies clear for everyone to see this great phenomenon. It will be a terrific show. If you happen to see something unexplained, let us know here at Weirld.
