2 Obscure Legends of Great Lake Sea Creatures

With all the news about the Alaskan Sea Monster, I decided to do some more research on the monsters of the Great Lakes. Being avid readers of Weirld, as I know you are, then you are already familiar with Bessie, the Lake Erie monster. Besides Bessie, there are c couple of other local legends from around the different lakes I wanted to inform you about.

The first creature, which I think has the coolest name, is the Sea Panther. This creature is said to inhabit Lake Michigan and the west side of the state of Michigan. Simon Otto, of Petosky, MI, retells the stories of this creature that he had heard from the Indian elders in the area. In fact, Otto's grandfather had seen this creature and referred to is as the big snake that lived in the woods. This is the only research I could find on this creature, and the only one in Lake Michigan.

The next creature, out of Lake Superior is often referred to as Pressie. Pressie may be a relative of the Sea Panther, or one in the same creature. Pressie, named after Presque Isle River, where one of the greatest sightings occurred. The native Indians called this creature Mishipishu and referred to it as a spiky cat-like creature or serpent. modern sightings of Pressie refer to it as a serpent, or snake-like, creature with a horse-like head, body of a snake and tail like a whale, and being dark green in color.

There have been many sightings of Pressie, as usual, the written account is much better than the photographic evidence which is grainy at best. In the summer of 1981 in Munising, four children and teenagers, all siblings, observed a serpent showing 3-5 humps rising 1-2 feet out of the water (the slower it went the higher the humps). As it came within about 20 yards of the private beach, one of the children ran away crying and the animal headed away showing lower humps. In the middle 1990's, during the summer, fishermen watched in horror as a large aquatic animal pulled a wading buck deer under (leaving only it's severed head) near Point Iroquois, Michigan.

I am interested in any legends and stories that you may have of sea serpents in the Great Lakes. You can post them here or email us through the site.
