As many of you know, Ohio is full of haunted locations and creepy stories of encounters with the paranormal. I have written about Ohio University and The Ridges in the past, you can look the article up on the site. I wanted to share with you some of the lesser known tales of the weird from Ohio. First up is a report from Denison University.

“Hey, this is a really cool website you got here. I just thought I'd share something with you that happened to me a few years back while attending Denison University in Granville, Ohio. So here it is.

Around 8 or 9 one warm night back in 1999, I was sitting in front of the computer in my dorm room typing up a paper for my Ancient Epics class. The only door to my room was behind me and it was closed and locked. My roommate had gone off to the rec center, so I was the only one in the room.

About half way through my report, I felt a little tap on my right shoulder. There had been a water leak in my room, so I just thought it was a drop of water from the ceiling. But just a couple seconds later, the room got really cold and I felt someone's hand on the same shoulder...like they were leaning over me to see what I was writing. I thought it was kind of odd cause I didn't hear the door open. I turned to see who it was, and nothing was there.

I just froze in my seat and kept thinking, "Should I run or should I stay still?" Finally I chose to get the hell outta there! I jumped up out of my chair and hi-tailed it out of the door and down the hallway. My heart was beating 200 miles an hour and I was shaking like a leaf in a hurricane. After a few minutes I calmed down, but every time I tried to go back in the room, I'd get a really strange feeling and start shaking again. Needless to say I didn't get my paper in on time. I spent the majority of the night down in the lobby trying to gain enough courage to try to go back in my room.

When my roommate got back a couple hours later, he went in and to his surprise (despite the warm temperature outside), the room was colder than ice. He asked me how it got so cold in there without having any windows open or fans blowing and I just kinda played it off. After we both went back in the room, the coldness faded away.

I never did tell him about the hand I felt on my shoulder nor the sudden change of temperature when I felt it. Chamberlin Lodge (where I lived) used to be a frat house--I think one of the oldest on campus...and in the Denison Cemetery there was a tombstone with the name Chamberlin on it. Maybe it was a frat brother who paid a visit to see what was going on in his old room; I'm not sure. I just know one thing--I never want to experience anything like that again!”

Ghost stories are very creepy, what’s even creepier is Satan’s Hollow in Blue Ash, OH. This place is said to be the site of satanic worship that is underground in the sewer system. It is said that the satan worshipers there raised many demons and even dealt with satan himself. Today, the sewer system is said to be the place of one of those demons that presents itself as a shadow person. There are also reports of a woman’s screams that can be heard throughout the area.

Now Ohio is famous for it’s covered bridges. Many have been photographed and put into calendars and such. There are a few that are said to be haunted and have an erie past. One of my favorites is the covered bridge in Milford, OH. The tale says that if you pull up to the bridge in the dark of night, shut off your car and flash your headlights 3 times an image of a man that hung himself will appear in the trees on the other side. The tale also goes on to say that your car will not start back up again until you have seen this image. To make this tale even scarier, a church of satan is said to be nearby and a black truck from there will chase you away trying to run you off the road. Once again, this is just a tale, or is it…..

Ohio is also home to some great Monster legends. One of my favorites, aside from the Grassman, is that of the Loveland Frogman. This story starts back in 1955 when a businessman observed 4 creatures on the side of the road. These creatures were approximately 3-4 feet tall, leathery green skin, stood upright, had heads similar to a frog and wrinkles on its scalp where hair should be. The creatures raised a sparking wand that scared the businessman and he high tailed it out of there. Now 17 years later in 1972, a police officer had an encounter with a similar creature that was on the side of the road. It darted in front of his cruiser, causing him to slam on his brakes. Getting out of the car he went to examine the creature. It stood up and walked to the side of the road, stepped over the guard rail and disappeared into the river. A few nights later, another officer encountered the same creature. He took out his firearm and took a shot at the creature. This creature did the same thing, stepped over the guard rail and disappeared into the river. When asked why he shot, the officer said he wanted to confirm the other officers report. The last report of the frogman came from a farmer in the area that was checking his lands and reported seeing 4 of these creatures walking along the river. There hasn’t been another sighting of the Frogman in some 35 years, which has lead to much speculation that the Frogman was really an alien making a visit to Earth.

These are just a few tales from Ohio that I know. There have been may books written about the haunted places and monsters of Ohio and a simple web search will reveal enough information to keep you busy for a month. I will leave you with one last area that you need to see in Ohio, and that is Miamitown. It is one of the oldest cities in the state with a haunted past that will scare anyone.
