Sad news from Loren Coleman at Cryptomundo yesterday. Linda Scarberry, one of the first to see the Mothman in 1966 died on Sunday morning, March 6th 2011 following a brief battle with cancer.

Scarberry became involved in what was to become one of the Fortean world’s most intriguing cases on November 15th 1966. With her husband Roger and their friends Steve and Mary Mallette, she encountered the creature at the West Virginia Ordinance Works, a then abandoned World War II munitions factory, known locally as TNT. Having apparently been chased by a large, winged creature with glowing eyes they reported the incident to local law enforcement. When the press caught up with the story the creature was dubbed “Mothman”.

The sightings, which attracted the attention of a number of the weird world’s greatest researchers (including John Keel and Rick Moran), subsided following the tragic collapse of The Silver Bridge but occasional reports persisted.

The Mothman statue at Point Pleasant, Virginia bears this description of the incident:

“On a chilly November night in 1966, two young couples drove into the TNT area north of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, when they realized they were not alone. What they saw that night has evolved into one of the great mysteries of all time; hence the Mothman Legacy began. It has grown into a phenomenon known all over the world by millions of curious people asking questions: What really happened? What did these people see? Has it been seen since? It still sparks the world's curiosity - the mystery behind Point Pleasant West Virginia's MOTHMAN.”

Our thoughts at www.weirld.com are with Linda Scarberry’s family and friends.
