As the legend goes, a Dr. Crowe was in charge of an orphanage just outside the Cleveland, OH area. It is said that outcast children with problems like hydrocephalous were sent here. The good doctor took care of these children, feeding them, clothing them, putting a roof over their head, and occasionally conducting experiments on them. In particular, it is said he would inject fluids of different kinds into the brains and heads of these children. The experiments had many side effects, including making the heads of these children larger and stunting their growth.
Over time, these children became rabid, craving the flesh of humans. People who would venture out to the property are said to never be seen again. It is assumed they became a meal of these children. The children, being disfigured and crazed, turned on the good doctor and killed him, as the legend goes. With the doctor no longer there, these disfigured large headed people are said to roam the land of the old orphanage, scavenging for whatever food they can find, including the curious passerby.
Thus, the legend of the Melon Heads was born. They are said to be between 3-4 feet tall with large round heads. They only come out at night and are said to make animalistic noises to communicate. I have never seen any of these creatures, but there are those with Weirld that swear they exist.
To add to the skepticism of this legend, there are similar legends to this one. The closest regionally and legend wise is that of the Felt Mansion in Laketown Township. According to the legend, there were children with hydrocephalus who lived at the Junction Insane Asylum near Felt Mansion. The story explains that, after enduring physical and emotional abuse, same as the story from Ohio, just missing the experimentation part. The children became feral mutants and were released into the forests surrounding the asylum. History records show that there was no asylum near the mansion, although the mansion was at one point a hospital. Some versions of the legend say that the children once lived in the mansion itself, but later retreated to a system of underground caverns. Other versions of this legend say that the children devised a plan to escape and kill the doctor that abused them, sound familiar? The difference between this story and the Ohio story is there are no sightings of the Melon Heads anymore.
I will leave it to you to decide whether or not these creatures exist. To answer our questions, I will be conducting some research and then doing an investigation near the area in Ohio that is said to be the home of the Melon Heads. I will try to lay rest to this legend, one way or another.
Look for my report in the future and some of the other Legends that we have debated here at Weirld.
