Most of us have heard of the Mothman, the winged entity that appeared to the citizens of Point Pleasant, WV right before the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967. Well, the city of Detroit has its own harbinger of death, too--although not as well-known.  It's called the Nain Rouge, which loosely translated, means ‘red dwarf’ or ‘red gnome.' Many in Detroit simply call it the ‘Red devil’, and every time this creature is seen, a disaster usually hits the city.  Let's take a closer look at how the legend of the Nain Rouge started…

Last night saw viewers on the edge of their seats for the Season 3 finale of the original UK vampire-werewolf-ghost drama “Being Human.” And fans have been promised a fourth season of the drama in 2012. Of course viewers in the US and Canada get their very own version of the intelligent fantasy drama on SyFy, too. To celebrate www.weirld.com offers 3 weird (but true) facts about werewolves in honour of Russell Tovey and his character George.

Sad news from Loren Coleman at Cryptomundo yesterday. Linda Scarberry, one of the first to see the Mothman in 1966 died on Sunday morning, March 6th 2011 following a brief battle with cancer. Scarberry became involved in what was to become one of the Fortean world’s most intriguing cases on November 15th 1966. With her husband Roger and their friends Steve and Mary Mallette, she encountered the creature at the West Virginia Ordinance Works, a then abandoned World War II munitions factory, known locally as TNT. Having apparently been chased by a large, winged creature…

Looking a bit like Justin Timberlake with an easy grin and an enthusiasm that’s infectious, Pat Spain is a wildlife scientist with a special interest in crypto-zoological creatures, ones that may or may not exist, and he’s traveled the globe to investigate them for the new National Geographic Channel series Beast Hunter, premiering Mar. 4. Having grown up the middle of three kids in Wynantskill, New York and earned his Bachelor of Science from Suffolk University in Boston, Spain created a Web series called Nature Calls in 2005, which ultimately put him on Nat Geo’s…

Snakes have always been an interest of mine. I love the legless reptiles that seem to strike fear into most people. Maybe the fear of snakes comes from the biblical story of the ‘Fall of Man’. When Eve was tempted by a serpent to eat of the forbidden fruit, as punishment for tempting Eve, the serpent was forced to crawl on its belly the rest of its days. Many attribute this story to the creation of snakes and their dark, evil labels they’ve been given.

The name, Chupacabre, itself strikes fear. I asked a friend of mine what the first image was that came to his head when I said the name Chupacabre, his response, ‘zombie’. That kind of threw me off a little in our discussion, so I had to ask why. He stated that he thought of the word ‘Macabre’ and thus thought of a zombie. I guess I can follow that reasoning. Maybe that is why the word Chupacabre strikes fear in people so quickly. They make a mental relation to that of the dead, especially those…

This has been a hotly debated topic between some of us here at Weirld. Are there monsters out there that have been made by a mad scientist? Can we play ‘God’ and change or combine creatures like they did in the SciFi Horror movie, ‘Splice’? We all agree that there has been attempts to make such creatures, what we disagree on is some of the legends that have arisen from the stories of such tampering. I want to share with you the legend behind one of our discussions here, that is the story of the…

A rather new entry into the paranormal is that of ‘Sky Fish’ or rather Rods. These are creatures that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Yet, there are miles of film footage that show a creature darting about through the sky that looks like a little squiggly mark. To take it to a very literal meaning, these are small UFO’s. What could these things possibly be?

Seems like there are more cryptid reports than ever before lately, and so, to help you identify that hairy thing that walks in front of your car, swims past your boat, flys over your head, or crawls out from beneath your bed, we thought we would post this awesomely cool Top 50 Cryptids list by Loren Coleman of Cryptomundo. The list is a bit dated (no mention of Lizard Man or Ohio Grassman, among other things), but nevertheless, its a great resource to have handy just in case you need to quickly identify something that…

As a youth I loved reading Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park books.  The theories of bringing partial DNA code from dinosaurs out of fossilized mosquitoes, was nothing short of brilliant, especially in 1990.   It was this book that really had me thinking about ‘resurrecting’ extinct animals.  Is it possible?  What would be the implications if we did?  Could we control it? There is a plethora of moral, spiritual, and scientific questions that I can come up with concerning bringing back the extinct.

There are many stories and myths about wolves that circulate in all cultures.  Most of these stories make the wolf out to be pure evil,  even little nursery ryhmes and children's stories like 'Little Red Riding Hood" and 'The Three Little Pigs'.  A recent movie I have watched even vilified the wolf, '300'.  The hero went into the wild and faced his fear, killing the wolf and bringing it back to camp to prove his manhood and superior hunting and fighting skills.  There are stories that do not classify the wolf as an evil creature,…
