How I got into cryptid reasearch and my first, and only, live sighting of Bigfoot

patterson_bigfootThose of you that know me have already heard this story.  I wanted to share with the Wierld Community what inspired me.  How did I become so involved in the research of cryptids and UFO’s/Aliens.  By nature, I am a skeptic, always have been.  I am one of those see it to believe it kind of guys, as most of us humans are.  I have shared with you my first UFO sighting, here is my only bigfoot sighting.

It was an early October morning.  Bow season had just opened in Michigan and I was hunting some state land in Kalkaska County.  There was the normal dew in the grass, a slight breeze, and the sky was starting to glow from the impending sunrise.  It really was starting off to be a beautiful morning.  Sitting in my tree stand, I had an open field slightly to my left, two runs that went past me toward the creek that was on my right.  The creek was about 200 yds to my right.  I could see where the ground went down to the creek bed and then back up the other side.  I could see the far bank from my position, but I could not see the water.

Now, the sun had crested the Earth and was starting to light up the woods completely.  I had an arrow knocked and ready, just in case I had that prize whitetail come up that I have been looking for; and unfortunately I am still looking for, but that’s another story.  I heard the normal noises you hear in the woods, trees cracking, leaves blowing, an annoying squirrel running around collecting nuts and getting ready to hibernate.  I was intently scanning the woods, looking, listening, waiting for that buck.  I started to hear some movement, crackling coming from the creek area.  My first thought was, finally, at least I’ll get something today.

The noises continued.  As I listened, I heard a little grunting, like I had never heard.  So I started running through my head what could it be.  I listened longer to the rustling and crackling of branches, water splashing every once in awhile, and the occasional snort/grunt.  I kept searching through my head about what the sounds could be.  I remembered a local telling me that there had been a few black bear sighted in the area.  I figured that’s what it was, just a big dumb bear.  The more I thought about it, the more irritated I got, if there is a bear here, then there are no deer here.  So I un knocked my arrow and watched toward the creek to see if I can get at least a glimpse of the animal the ruined my morning hunt.  As I watched and listened, I heard the animal splash through the creek again.  I figured it had just walked through to the other side.  I kept watching, kept listening till I finally seen something.  At first it looked like an ugly bear from the backside till I seen it reach out its arm and grab a tree.  Then it stood almost upright and lumbered off into the woods.  I couldn’t believe my eyes.  What the hell was that?

Part of me wanted to run after it and get a clear view, another part of me wanted to jump down and run the other way to get away from whatever manner of creature that was.  So I sat there.  Dumfounded.  Was it the Dogman I had read about?  It didn’t look like a dog, but who knows.  I finally got the nerve up to get out of the stand and head back to my truck.  The whole time searching the woods for whatever that was that I had seen.  I got back to my truck, packed up my gear and drove off.  I still had the image of this animal burned into my brain.  I could close my eyes and see it, plain as day.

I got home, shared my experience with a friend, who quickly stated, you seen a Bigfoot.  I denied it at first, believing they only lived in the Northwest.  One thing lead to another, I started looking at the library for information on the Michigan Bigfoot and found many articles and claimed sightings.  That set me off on my lifelong adventure.  I can honestly say, I have never seen anything like that again.  I have come across a couple footprints, and an area where it looked like something had cleared the ground to bed down for a night.  I have talked to people that claim they have seen Bigfoot.  I don’t claim to be an expert on Bigfoot by any means, but who can honestly say they are an expert of an animal that has yet to be proven real?
